The Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya was established in 1938. The Board commenced to issue currency in 1939 to replace the Strait Settlement currency. All the notes issued by the Board bore the portrait of King George VI (1936-1952). These paper money were issued in denominations in Cents and Dollars. During the Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the Japanese introduced its own currency. The currency was fix at 1 Japanese Yen = 1 Malayan dollars. However, after the British regained their status in Malaya States, the Japanese occupation currency was declared worthless and the Malayan dollars was reinstated its value relative to sterling. There were two types of Malayan currency issued by the Board in different dates. One was issued in 1940 with the denominations in 10 cents, 25 cents, 1 dollar, 5 dollars and 10 dollars. Due to the war in Europe, these notes were barely circulated in Malaya States. Another type of note was issued in 1941 and 1942 with the denominations in 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar, 5 dollars, 10 dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars, 1000 dollars and 10000 dollars. Eventhough they were printed in 1941 and 1942, these notes were only been issued in 1945 after the British had regained their control in the States. The following are the notes issued in 1941 and 1942. The note of 1 cent, 5 cents and 10 cents do not have any printing on the back side. The item in picture is the item you will receive.

This 50 cents currency is purple and orange color, with portrait of King George VI, engraved and printed by Thomas De La Rue Co,. London, signed by H.Weisberg, Chairman of Commissioners,size 114mmx76mm.


The reverse of this currency has the arms of Straits Settlements on top,centre surrounded by federated & Unfederated Malay States and Brunei arms.

There are a few versions of this 50 cents 1941 paper money namely variety “a” & “a”, variety “b” & “b”, variety “b” & “c” and variety “b” & “d” of which variety “b” & “d” is the most expensive of the group,next in value is variety “b” & “c” and then variety “a” & “a” and vareity “b” & “b”
